Surrender

As I sit down with the title on top of the page to write about surrender, the first thought that crosses my mind is, "surrender is the hardest thing to do" contradicted by another thought immediately, "It is the easiest thing to do."

So, I got paralyzed with the conflicting ideas, struggling about how to get started with the essay. I decided to just start expressing this inner conflict to start out the essay and see where it takes me. I simply surrendered and took the first step. Surrender is easy.

But some times we get so hung up on knowing the outcome, being perfect, and all that jive, that we get paralyzed by it, and surrender becomes the hardest of things. And so it is with everything in life.

When we become clear on what it is that we want, what we desire, the next thing to do is surrender; surrender to a power that is greater than us, a power that knows the solution to our desired outcome; and let that power guide us to the first step we must take to get moving.

While visualizing and daydreaming has its purpose, and allows us the peace and contentment of knowing when we have come to the place that we desired at the onset, we must act so that we may experience that outcome.

Some people just sit there visualizing all day and never take action, or at least not the correct or effective action because they are paralyzed by the fear of taking the wrong action. Others jump right into taking action, believing that any action is better than no action and that by acting they will get to where they want to go. Only trouble is that they don't have a clear enough picture to know when they get there, so they keep on going, never stopping to enjoy the benefit of their actions.

The solution is obviously in the balance between the two, in harmonizing your thoughts and actions. One without the other is futile. An old Japanese proverb sums it all up.

Vision without action is daydreaming. Action without a vision is nightmare.

I think you are correct - on both counts. Surrender is both the easiest and the hardest thing to do.

It is the hardest thing because most of us are in the habit of resisting, and so resistance becomes our path of least resistance. :-)

It is the easiest thing to do because it does not require DOING at all. It requires a cessation of doing, until we receive the inspiration to act from our being.

Which brings us back to one reason it is the hardest thing to do, because ceasing to DO something, anything, is extremely difficult for many, if not most, of us.

I'm getting dizzy just thinking about it.

Ah, it's not that hard.

Stop kicking and fighting and just tell your mind - and spirit - what you want to do. Dr. Joseph Murphy used to say that if you just tell your subconscious what you want it to do, it will listen.

So instead of wondering how to overcome the resistance and how to surrender. Insted of trying to figure out the conflict.

Just simply tell your mind to...

Surrender.

Just make the decision to...

Release, loose, let go and let God.

What I have found to be my experience and that of my students, is that we just don't make that decision. We are so busy thinking about all of it and analyzing, that we don't stop and make the simple decision to do what we want to do.

It really is a choice. I get caught up in the drama too, but then I finally realize that I can make a clear cut choice. And at that moment I do it. And the release, surrender comes easier. It doesn't matter what feelings are accompanying it. It can even be fear or doubt. But I still let go, even with those feelings. And as soon as I let go, those feelings disappear.

I hope this makes sense.

Marilyn
